Warriors’ Path State Park

This 950-acre state park includes the area around the Fort Patrick Henry Reservoir and Duck Island and is named for the Great Indian Warpath—a raiding trail used by the Iroquois and Cherokee Indians. Warriors’ Path’s mountain bike trail is internationally known by enthusiasts and has been designated as a National Recreation Trail. The trail is 12.5 miles long and provides a good challenge for intermediate mountain bikers.

Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium

If your goal is to get some amazing views of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, Bays Mountain is definitely the go-to spot! Its 3,550-acre park is also a wildlife refuge that’s crisscrossed by numerous small rivers and creeks, which means that you can count on coming across a huge variety of plants and animals. Bays Mountain Park offers 32 miles of trails, much of which is considered to be quite rugged, so taking along a good mountain bike is a must.

After enjoying a scenic ride, you can stop by at the park’s state-of-the-art planetarium. The planetarium’s dome spans a diameter of 40 feet and uses a Zeiss ZKP-4 projector to dramatically recreate the starry night sky.

The trails range from 0.2 to 0.59 miles in length and are clearly marked by signs as being easy, intermediate, or difficult.
