If you're interested in doing some hiking around Kingsport, check out a few of these top trails. more Kingsport Greenbelt Those who enjoy getting outside and exploring nature should consider the excellent multi-use trail that Kingsport Greenbelt has to offer. This 9-mile paved trail runs along the Holston River and Reedy Creek and connects residential neighborhoods, downtown commercial districts, and local parks. As the trail meanders through the landscape, you'll have an opportunity to view wetlands from the boardwalk, look for birds in the meadows, and check out some of the historical sites around the city. Warriors' Path State Park The 950-acre Warriors' Path State Park was named for the path that the Iroquois used during war raids with the Cherokee and other tribes. Today, the park is an exceptional place to enjoy some hiking. Here you'll find 12 miles of hiking trails that take you along peaceful streams, up to high bluffs, and through shaded forests. Along the way, you'll be able to spot a variety of native wildlife and wildflowers. If you're looking for an easy walk, consider the 0.5-mile Lakeshore Trail. For something a little more strenuous, check out the 2.9-mile Sinking Waters Trail. Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium The scenic Bays Mountain Park stretches across 3,550 pristine acres on Bays Mountain in Kingsport. As this park offers over 39 miles of beautiful hiking trails that cover almost the entire park, it is a fantastic place to learn about diverse ecosystems and the wildlife that lives there, including wolves, bobcats, and raptors. For one of the best views in the park, take the 0.7-mile Fire Tower Trail to the top of the fire tower. If you want to enjoy views of the Kingsport Reservoir, head out on the 2.3-mile Lakeside Trail. Those who are interested in the stars and planets may want to also visit the state-of-the-art Planetarium Theater at the Nature Center. Laurel Run Park Laurel Run Park is situated right next to Bays Mountain Park and offers just as many excellent hiking opportunities. If you love waterfalls, you can take the 20-minute hike to Kiner Creek Falls or you can opt for the 20-minute hike to the scenic Laurel Falls. For a unique perspective of the surrounding area, take a hike up to the 300-foot overlook that rises above the park. From here, you'll be able to see old homesteads, a smokehouse, an unfinished cabin, and more. Buffalo Mountain Park Located about 30 minutes south of Kingsport, Buffalo Mountain Park is a hilly area with forested hiking trails that take you to everything from plummeting waterfalls to panoramic overlooks. For a challenge, take the 4.5-mile White Rock Trail loop. Along the way, you can stop by the overlooks at Huckleberry Knob and Tip Top for breathtaking views of the surrounding area. They have a great deal to offer adventurous nature lovers. more Warrior's Path State Park Warrior's Path State Park is a 950-acre park that sits along an old Native American trading path. It is located along the shore of the Patrick Henry Reservoir on the Holston River at 490 Hemlock Road in Kingsport. The park boasts an 18-hole regulation golf course, 134 campsites with tables, grills, and water and electric hookups, and five picnic pavilions capable of accommodating 100 to 160 people each. The pavilions must be reserved by calling the park office and paying a small reservation fee. Large lodge rentals are available for corporate meetings or other large-scale events. They are equipped with bathrooms and fountains but have no kitchen facilities. All buildings at the park are ADA accessible. Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium For a combination of natural beauty and celestial wonder, head over to Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium at 853 Bays Mountain Park Road in Kingsport. There you'll find a pristine 3,500-acre nature preserve, a 44-acre lake, a planetarium theater, a nature center, and a multitude of animal habitats. The primary residents of the animal habitats at the park include wolves, bobcats, red foxes, falcons, hawks, owls, rattlesnakes, many species of amphibians, white-tail deer, river otters, turtles, and many fish species. Wildlife observation is best achieved through a guided barge ride tour, available each weekday at 3 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 1, 2, and 5 p.m. Primitive camping areas are available for scout groups and other recognized organizations. Fishing is permitted for people 55 and older or teens and children under 16 years of age. Proof of age is required, and everyone 12-15 years of age must have a youth fishing license. The most common fish found in the park are bluegill, bass, and channel catfish. Borden Park If you prefer a more organized park that is packed with fun activities to enjoy, head over to Borden Park at 901 Lamont Street in Kingsport. This smaller 17-acre park includes an arboretum, barbecue grills, an asphalt basketball court, a community building, horseshoe pits, an 18-hole golf course, seven picnic shelters, many different playgrounds, half a dozen well-lit tennis courts, a long paved walking trail, and an event area. The park is pet friendly, has a disc golf course, and is handicap accessible thanks to generous aid from the Kingsport Rotary Club. Each offers easy access from Kingsport, along with interesting things to do and see for all ages. more Gray Gray is located about 15 miles from Kingsport, so it's an accessible spot for locals. At the Gray Fossil Site, you can learn more about dinosaurs. The fossil site is actually an active dig site featuring fossils from the Pliocene era. Scientists who have worked on the site believe that it formed when an underground limestone cave collapsed, creating a sinkhole that left fossil deposits dating back more than 5 million years. The Natural History Museum features various animals on display, including saber-toothed cats, camel without humps, semi-aquatic pot-bellied rhinos, and shovel-tusked elephants. Both the museum and dig site are part of the Hands On! Discovery Center, an interactive museum that encourages children to learn through hands-on experiences. Jonesborough In Jonesborough, you and your family can spend the day at Wetlands Waterpark. The park is about 28 miles from Kingsport and opens each May, remaining open until the end of the summer. This expansive outdoor water park features several fiberglass flume slides, water bubblers, a rain tree, tumble buckets, a zero-depth wading area, and slides for kids. Covered pavilions, a sand volleyball court, lounge chairs, and a covered dining area are also available to guests. Chuckey If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of your busy life, book a campsite at Pebble Mountain Family Campground, located in Chuckey. The campground is 42 miles from Kingsport and provides a quiet retreat for families. It sits just outside the Cherokee National Forest, offering access to the trails and natural surroundings within the park. Dogs are welcome at this campsite as well. You can enjoy meals with the hosts on specific days. Mosheim The Wandering Llamas offers a delightful and unique adventure for families in the area. Located in Mosheim, this attraction allows visitors to take day hikes with a friendly pack of llamas in the Smoky Mountains. You'll have to travel about 50 miles to get there, but it's well worth the trip. You and your family members will be on foot, while the llamas will carry the items you need on your hike in special backpacks.
