Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2023 Toyota GR86 is a two-door, four-seat sports car in three trim levels. The entry-level trim is the base, followed by the upscale, full-featured Premium. The Special Edition is the range-topper but is also a limited edition and may not be available at your dealership.
Available exterior features include 18-inch alloy wheels (matte black on the Special Edition) and rear spoilers. Most models' exterior colors include Track Red, Neptune, Halo, Raven, Trueno Blue, Pavement, and Steel. For the Special Edition, a distinctive Solar Shift paint scheme is available.
Engine (Power)
The original 2023 Toyota GR86 debuted in 2011 for the 2012 model year and lasted until 2021 before getting a complete redesign for the 2022 model year, including a new, upgraded engine. Only a single powertrain is available for the 2023 Toyota GR86, but it's unique.
The 2.4-liter flat four-cylinder horizontally opposed engine generates up to 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. In terms of the transmission, you can choose a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The manual transmission is standard, with the option of an automatic transmission.
Performance
Real-world testing from Car and Driver revealed excellent performance. While the previous generation went from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, the new, more powerful engine significantly improves that performance. Real-world testing revealed a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.4 seconds and a 14-second quarter-mile sprint.
The manual transmission proved slightly faster and offered smooth shifting at all levels. The Toyota GR86's handling is athletic and agile, making it outstanding on the road or the track. It also achieves a respectable EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.
Interior
The vehicle's cabin is sleek, futuristic, and comfortable, with plenty of bolstering and padding in the front seats and soft-touch materials. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is standard, and simulated suede seats are available in the Premium trim.
An 8-inch touchscreen interface drives the infotainment system, which is an inch larger than the last-gen model. You also get a 7-inch digital gauge display that is customizable with normal, sport, and track modes. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come included, as is SiriusXM satellite radio.
Safety Features
Toyota has long prioritized safety in its vehicles, and the 2023 Toyota GR86 is no exception. The base trim offers adaptive cruise control to maintain a set distance between you and the car in front of you, automatic emergency braking and frontal crash warning to protect against accidents, a lane-departure warning to keep you centered, and automatic high beams.
