As alternative fuel vehicles continue to grow in popularity, the RAV4 continues to impress with its hybrid model. It has a spacious cabin, excellent fuel efficiency, and comes with features for comfort, safety, and entertainment. The 2021 RAV4 Hybrid has a new midlevel XLE Premium trim level, and Toyota added a new RAV4 Prime model with a plug-in hybrid design that has even more power than all the other models. Here's a look at the 2021 RAV4 Hybrid.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level LE has 17-inch wheels, power-folding side exterior mirrors, and LED headlights. The XLE adds projector LED headlights, fog lights, and keyless entry. The new XLE Premium comes with 18-inch wheels, a sunroof, and a power liftgate. The XSE is the sporty model and has 18-inch black-painted wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and a two-tone exterior paint scheme with black trim. The upscale Limited adds 18-inch chrome wheels.
Depending on the trim level, a panoramic sunroof is an available option.
Engine (Power)
Power for the RAV4 Hybrid comes from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and two electric motors. One motor works with the continuously variable automatic transmission to power the front wheels. The second sends power to the rear wheels when it senses that you need more traction. Every RAV4 Hybrid has all-wheel drive and delivers a total of 219 horsepower.
Performance
There's plenty of power generated from the hybrid powertrain to get the RAV4 efficiently up to speed. The torque from the electric motor helps it accelerate quickly, and it has the power to easily pass on the highway. The suspension does an excellent job of eating up road imperfections, and passengers will appreciate the smooth ride. If you choose the XSE, it has a firmer suspension and delivers a sportier ride.
Interior
Just like the regular RAV4, the hybrid seats five. There is 37.6 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, and this can increase to 69.8 cubic feet with the back seats folded down. You'll sit on cloth upholstery in the entry-level models, with Toyota's simulated leather added to the XLE Premium and above. These higher trims also get a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The XSE adds paddle shifters, heated front seats, and ambient cabin lighting.
Technology features include a 7-inch touch screen, satellite radio, a USB port, and Wi-Fi. Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto all come standard. An 8-inch touch screen is available, and you can also get an 11-speaker JBL stereo system.
Safety Features
Toyota's Safety Sense 2.0 suite of advanced driver aids come standard with every RAV4. This second-generation set of safety equipment includes full-speed adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic braking. It also includes a road sign recognition system, lane-departure warning, and a lane-centering assist system. A blind-spot monitor comes in the XLE and above, along with a rear cross-traffic alert. The Advanced Technology Package is an option for the XLE Premium and XSE. It adds front and rear parking sensors and rear cross-traffic automatic braking.
