2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid has the space families need and the technology to keep everyone entertained and connected, and it's fuel-efficient whether you drive around town or on the highway. For the 2021 model year, the Highlander Hybrid upgrades to the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, and LED projector headlights now come standard.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The entry-level Highlander Hybrid is the L. It has 18-inch wheels, keyless entry, heated side door mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED taillights, LED headlights, and a washer for the rear camera. The LE adds LED fog lights and a power liftgate, and the XLE comes with a power moonroof and roof rails.
A step up to the Limited gets you 20-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights, a hands-free liftgate, puddle lights, and high-output LED fog lights. If you choose the Platinum, it comes with adaptive self-leveling LED projector headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and illuminated door sills.
Engine (Power)
The hybrid version of the Highlander uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine and two electric motors. Combined, these generate 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive now comes standard, which is a change for 2021 where every trim had all-wheel drive, but this is still available as an option. A continuously variable automatic transmission is the only transmission.
Performance
The hybrid powertrain provides the Highlander with plenty of power for everyday driving, getting you up to 60 mph in just over seven seconds. The suspension works effortlessly to soak up road imperfections, so the ride stays soft and comfortable. The responsive steering and strong brakes make it fun to take the Highlander Hybrid over back roads where there are lots of twists and turns.
Interior
The standard configuration in the Highlander Hybrid has eight seats. Trading the second-row bench seat for captain's chairs reduces seating to seven and makes accessing the third row easier. Comfort features such as tri-zone automatic climate control and an eight-way adjustable driver's seat come standard, with options available such as simulated leather upholstery, heated front seats, and power adjustments for the two front seats. Leather upholstery is added to the higher trims.
An 8-inch touch screen comes standard in the L, along with two 12-volt power outlets, four USB ports, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and satellite radio. Wireless charging comes in the XLE, and the Limited gets a 120-volt power outlet. Bumping up to the Platinum adds upgraded tech features such as a 12.3-inch touch screen, and this trim has a 10-inch color head-up display.
Safety Features
All of the Highlander Hybrid models come standard with a rearview camera and the next-generation Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ suite. This has a pre-collision system with low light pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, and lane tracing assist. It also includes road sign recognition and automatic high beam headlights. A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is an available option for most trims, and you can also get a front and rear parking assist system with automatic braking.
