The 2020 Toyota Highlander is a mid-size SUV crossover with increased cargo space and pleasing cabin materials. The Highlander offers a smooth ride and three-row seating for up to eight people along with an improved driving performance that gives drivers more power to the wheel that needs it most.
Premium Interior
Starting with the L in cloth seats, Toyota brings in tri-zone automatic climate control and an 8-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also a myriad of hard buttons for controlling simple climate tasks. The LE trim adds a power liftgate, leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob for comfortable hands, and additional multimedia functions. Stepping up to the XLE will give you second-row captain's chairs, bringing the seating down to seven people.
Simulated leather upholstery, a bigger driver information display with sleek, clear graphics and intuitive menus, heated adjustable front seats and a wireless smartphone charging pad are also XLE features. Carry on to the Limited if you want leather upholstery with ventilated front seats. Music lovers will like the premium 11-speaker JBL audio system, onboard 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Amazon Alexa integration is a standard feature. The top trim is the Platinum adding a large 12.3-inch touch screen, digital rearview mirror, along with a surround-view camera system, and a driver's head-up display.
The Toyota Highlander body is a little longer for 2020, and that extra room increases the cargo space. This makes the cargo capacity 16 cubic feet behind the third row with the seats in place. However, dropping the 60/40 split backs of the rear bench gives you a considerable 48.4 cubic feet of cargo space. The middle-row seats give taller passengers 41 inches of legroom.
Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.0
A bundle of active safety features standard on every new Highlander at no additional cost. Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection, warns of an approaching vehicle or pedestrian. Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control follows the vehicle ahead at a preset distance and has traffic sign recognition. Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist alerts the driver of possible unintended lane departures.
Multi-Terrain Select
Every AWD model lets you select improved traction for different road conditions and have a potent 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Highlander V-6 puts out 296 horsepower and makes 263 pound feet of torque. The Highlander has no problem zooming up to highway speed, even full of passengers and all the road trip gear. It rides smoothly on a variety of road surfaces in either front-wheel-drive or the optional all-wheel drive. Handling is stable, and the ride quality delivers what is asked of it due to the well-damped suspension. Rough road surfaces do not unsettle the chassis but provide the driver with a sense of reassuring control.
Trims
The 2020 Toyota Highlander comes in five trim levels: L, LE, XLE, Limited and Platinum. Beginning with the well-equipped L trim you'll have LED headlights, and the LE trim includes LED foglights. Next in line, the XLE tacks on a sunroof and roof rails for those garage sale deals. The Limited trim level sports 20-inch wheels, while the top of the line Platinum's special exterior feature is a panoramic sunroof, so you can really enjoy the trip through the mountains.
