Trim Levels
Either on- or off-road, the Tacoma remains among the best-selling pickups and Toyota demonstrates the commitment to maintaining the popularity by offering eight different models that expand into 29 varied combinations. The base trims are the SR and the SR5 which also includes a V-6 version. SR comes with color-keyed outside mirrors, rear fascia, and spoiler, an engine suspension skid plate, a deck rail system, with all riding on 16 steel wheels. The SR5 goes to a charcoal grille with chrome surround, projector headlights with Daytime Running Lights, a chrome rear bumper and intermittent wipers, all on attractive 16-inch silver alloy wheels. Stepping up to the SR-Sport brings a truck with projector-beam headlights integrated with wide-angle fog lights and a gray grille with a smoked finish. In addition to its color-keyed fascia and a 120-volt power outlet in the SMC deck, the vehicle sits on 17-inch machined alloy wheels. The TRD Off-Road features a chrome rear bumper with black overfenders on attractive 16-inch machined contrasting alloy wheels. The Limited features a silver grill, chrome-accented exterior mirrors, door handles, and rear fascia with the chassis set on 18-inch polished wheels. The influence from Toyota Racing Development is noticeable in the TRD Pro that includes the features of the Limited, along with 16-inch alloy wheels and a matte black hood scoop.
Engine
Tacoma is powered by one of two engines. The base models are driven by a 2.7-liter DOHC, 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine with variable timing. The efficient generator can throw 159 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, and 180 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. The other option is a 3.5-liter, V-6 direct-injection Atkinson-cycle that generates 278 hp at 6,000 rpm with 265 lb.-ft. at 4,600 rpm.
Interior
Hardcore off-roading can still be comfortable in Tacoma's leather-trimmed heated seats that you may find in the higher-end units. The cabin of the Tacoma is designed for uncomplicated operation. With enough room to comfortably seat five persons, the intuitive layout, with dual-zone automatic climate and soft-feel surfaces, introduces a calmness into the exhilaration of off-road driving.
Performance
Tacoma's brawny 3.5-liter V-6 engine can tow up to 6,800 lbs. The unique Fox Bypass shocks included in the TRD Pro provides remarkable damping in several drive modes, for a ride that is comfortable and smooth when off-roading. It is also easy to note the enhanced stability when the truck rolls on wide track tires. The front sway bar continually balances the soft steering response, even on very rough roads.
Safety Features
With much of the emphasis on Tacoma's off-road capability, safety still manages to remain one of the top priorities and an impressive number of features are included. Standard on all trims are features such as the electronic brake force distribution, anti-lock brake system, smart stop technology, braking assist system, and the traction and vehicle stability control technology control. Pre-collision systems with pedestrian detection, a sway warning system, a lane departure alert, high-speed cruise control, are also included with Toyota Smart Safety System.
