Trim Levels
The 2019 Toyota Highlander comes with a total of five regular trim options and three hybrids. The LE starts things off with a bargain price while still offering an Entune infotainment system, five USB charging ports, and three rows of seats. The LE Plus adds a power liftgate and SofTex leatherette seats, and the XLE gives you true leather and a premium audio system. The SE is a sporty trim with 19-inch wheels and a sport-tuned suspension, but for true luxury, you should get the Limited with its second-row captain's chairs, 12 JBL speakers, and front seats with both heating and ventilation. Hybrid models come in LE, XLE, and Limited trims.
Engine
The starting engine of the 2019 Highlander is an I-4 that takes up 2.7 liters and delivers 185 horsepower with 184 pound-feet of torque. However, most trims use a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that generates up to 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. This engine also upgrades the automatic transmission from a standard six-gear version to one with eight gears. Highlander Hybrid trims also use a 3.5-liter gasoline engine, and combined with an electric motor it has a net 306 horsepower. Hybrid models also come with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive, and with all that combined you can expect 27 highway and 29 city mpg.
Performance
The small I-4 engine can tow up to 1,500 pounds, but if you get a model with a V-6 you can expect the 2019 Toyota Highlander to pull up to 5,000 pounds. The hybrid splits the difference and tows up to 3,500 pounds. The suspension and steering of the Highlander put an emphasis on comfort since it's a family vehicle, and V-6 models also give you better traction with available all-wheel drive.
Interior
As a three-row SUV, the 2019 Highlander starts out by giving you 13.8 cubic feet for cargo, but that quickly goes up to 83.7 cubic feet when you fold down the two back rows. With the seats up and the available backseat entertainment system, you can keep the back-row passengers distracted thanks to a 9-inch display, wireless headphones, and a Blu-Ray player. Other available features for the interior include an 8-inch display for the front row with Entune Audio, leather seats, and three-zone automatic climate control.
Safety Features
Toyota emphasizes safety, which is why every 2019 Highlander comes standard with the Star Safety System, eight air bags, and Toyota Safety Sense P. That last package includes a suite of driver assistance features: Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Automatic Headlights, the Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. That last feature is very helpful because it can predict when a crash is about to happen and can start braking even before the human driver has time to react.
