Trim Levels
There are six trim levels of the Corolla, starting with the L, which has a starting manufacturer's suggested retail price of $18,700. Other trim levels and their starting MSRPs: LE ($19,135), LE Eco ($19,535), XLE ($22,135), SE ($20,635 for the automatic transmission and $21,865 for the six-speed manual), and XSE ($22,880).
Engine
All trim levels come with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder dual overhead cam 16-valve engine. On all but the LE Eco model, it produces 132 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and gets 28 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway. Because of its valve technology, the LE Eco trim level's engine produces 140 horsepower at 6,100 rpm, and it gets 30 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway. All trim levels come with a continuously variable (automatic) transmission. The SE is also available with a six-speed manual transmission. It gets 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.
Performance
The Corolla has an independent MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion-beam rear suspension, both with stabilizer bars. Steering is electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion.
Interior
A 6.1-inch touch screen displays the controls for the Entune audio system with an AM/FM CD player, six speakers, advanced voice recognition, hands-free phone capability, and phone book access. Optional on some higher-end trims is an enhanced system featuring a 7-inch touch screen with split-screen display, integrated navigation, Doppler weather maps, and a three-month trial of SiriusXM satellite radio. The fabric driver's seat is adjustable six ways and the front passenger seat is adjustable four ways. The rear seat is a 60/40 fold-down version. The tilt-telescoping steering wheel includes cruise control, audio, and Bluetooth controls. The vehicle has an auxiliary power outlet and a USB 2.0 port.
Safety Features
The Corolla has enhanced stability control, traction control, an anti-lock braking system with brake assist, Smart Stop Technology — which stops the car when both gas and brake pedals are pressed at the same time, a pre-collision system that detects pedestrians and other hazards, automatic high beam headlamps that turn off when they detect headlights or taillights ahead of you, lane departure alerts with steering assistance, and dynamic radar cruise control that will maintain a safe distance from the car in front of you when cruise control is activated. Hill start assist will keep the car from rolling backward when starting on an incline. A rear backup camera provides a projected path when in reverse. Adding protection are high-tensile-strength steel body panels, side-impact door beams, front and rear crumple zones, and an energy-absorbing collapsible steering column. The driver and front passenger seats are designed to lessen the severity of whiplash injuries. The Corolla comes equipped with eight air bags, including the driver and front passenger advanced air bag system, front and rear side-curtain air bags, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side air bags, a driver knee air bag, and a passenger seat-cushion air bag.
