Trim Levels

The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback comes in two trim levels: SE and XSE. From the front, the hatchback looks markedly different from the iM with a large honeycomb black mesh grille and redesigned headlights and bumper. Along the side, it remains largely the same in terms of design. One notable difference is that the outside mirrors have been relocated from the windshield pillar to the door for better visibility. Also, the new hatchback is lower, shorter, and wider than its predecessor. It is available in seven colors, including the new Blue Flame. The SE comes with a gun-metallic lower grille edge and 16-inch silver-painted alloy wheels, while the XSE features a satin chrome lower grille edge and 18-inch wheels.

Engine

An all-new engine adds to the 2019 Corolla Hatchback's appeal. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder replaces the iM's 1.8-liter four-cylinder, raising power output from 137 to 168 horsepower. There are also two all-new transmissions for you to choose from: a six-speed intelligent manual (iMT) and a dynamic-shift continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT uses a physical first gear to deliver smoother off-the-line acceleration and features 10 programmed ratios, manual shifting with either the gear selector or paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and selectable driving modes.

Performance

You can expect the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback to deliver a smooth and confident ride in most situations. Its driving manners are noticeably better than the iM's, thanks to its upgraded MacPherson strut front suspension and a new multi-link rear suspension. It rides over uneven surfaces smoothly and feels well-planted around turns. Its CVT features artificial intelligence to further enhance control around corners.

Interior

The 2019 Corolla Hatchback also received a major overhaul on the inside. The cabin has a roomy vibe thanks to a streamlined dashboard, thinner instrument panel, and other minimalist styling cues. The seats have been upgraded with more cushioning and support. The SE features cloth upholstery and six-way manually adjustable front seats, while the XSE gets leather upholstery and eight-way power front seats with power lumbar support. The Corolla Hatchback comes standard with the Entune 3.0 infotainment system, 8-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Wi-Fi connectivity, front and rear USB ports, and a six-speaker audio system. Optional features include wireless charging and a premium eight-speaker audio system.

Safety Features

The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback will be the first Toyota vehicle featuring the Safety Sense 2.0 package. Standard on both trims, the package includes road sign assistance, lane-tracing assistance, daytime cyclist detection, low-light pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and lane-keeping assistance.
