Trim Levels
For 2019, the Toyota 4Runner comes in seven trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, Limited Nightshade Edition, and TRD Pro. At the low end of the list you can count on features like 17-inch wheels, fog lights, and LED taillights. Premium trims add interior features like SofTex leatherette seats and Entune Audio, and the TRD Off-Road trims give you better off-road features like a locking rear differential, Crawl Control, and standard four-wheel drive. The Limited delivers dual-zone automatic climate control and parking sensors, the Nightshade Edition adds black accents, and the TRD Pro comes with Fox shocks, skid plates, and LED fog lights.
Engine
All trims of the 2019 4Runner run on a 4.0-liter V-6 engine that provides 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. Towing equipment comes standard, and thanks to its tough design the 4Runner has a towing limit of up to 5,000 pounds. A five-speed transmission comes standard with the engine. Also standard on TRD trims is a 4x4 drivetrain, but the rest let you choose between that and rear-wheel drive.
Performance
The 2019 Toyota 4Runner is at its best when the pavement is far behind. Unlike most SUVs of its size, the 4Runner is a durable body-on-frame design, the same type used in full-size trucks. The 4Runner can also come with Multi-Terrain Select, a feature that lets you twist a dial to select the kind of surface you're driving on and change the traction control and throttle. Crawl Control comes in handy when you're on extremely rough terrain like sand or rocks because it forces the SUV to go at a slow but steady pace. Of course, the best 4Runner for off-road adventures is the TRD Pro, which has an off-road-tuned suspension, Fox shocks, all-terrain tires, and an electronic locking rear differential.
Interior
The interior of the 2019 4Runner isn't its selling point, but you can still get a nice list of features like a 6.1-inch touch screen with HD Radio and navigation, perforated leather seats with front-row heat and ventilation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a premium sound system with 15 JBL speakers. The 4Runner also has plenty of room for passengers and cargo, with an available third seat row and up to 89.7 cubic feet for cargo once you fold the back rows down.
Safety Features
For safety, the 2019 Toyota 4Runner comes standard with a tire pressure monitoring system, the Star Safety System that connects six electronic safety features in one comprehensive package, and eight air bags. One optional safety feature is Safety Connect, a Toyota subscription service that lets you connect to an emergency call center in case of accidents or vehicle theft.
