Trim Levels
The Highlander comes in six different trim levels along with a hybrid model. The base level LE comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, integrated turn signals in the side mirrors, and tinted windows. A step up to the LE Plus adds a flip-up window in the back for easy access without having to open the door and some upgraded exterior styling. The XLE adds a moonroof, and the SE will get you a sport-tuned suspension and unique styling along with 19-inch wheels. Bump up to the Limited trim up for an upgraded interior, while the Limited Platinum adds a panoramic sunroof.
Engine
The base LE model comes with a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 185 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. There is also a 3.5-liter V-6 engine available for the rest of the trims that generates 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid model combines the V-6 with three electric motors for a total of 306 horsepower. The four-cylinder has a six-speed automatic, the V-6 gets an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the hybrid comes with a CVT. Front wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive offered as an option on all the models.
Performance
The Highlander is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs on the road. The four-cylinder will get an estimated 20 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway with the front-wheel drive, and the V-6 will get approximately 27 mpg on the highway. The V-6 engine has plenty of power to get the Highlander going on the highway and back roads, and it offers a smooth ride.
Interior
In the Highlander’s cabin, the seats are comfortable both in the front and back with plenty of support. In the back, the second row slides forward with just an easy pull on a lever to allow access to the third row, and there is also a configuration available with captain's chairs which adds space but reduces seating capacity. Behind the third row, you’ll find almost 14 cubic feet of cargo space, and when you fold the third seat down, it opens up to 42 cubic feet. Fold down the second row, and you’ll get over 83 cubic feet of storage space. The base model comes standard with a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and the higher trims upgrade this to an 8-inch screen.
Safety Features
All of the Highlander models come standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense package of advanced safety systems. This includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and a forward collision warning system with full-speed automatic emergency braking. It also comes with lane departure warning and active lane control. All the trims come with a rearview camera, but you can choose the Limited Platinum for a surround view camera system.
