Trim Levels
The C-HR is Toyota's first entry into the compact SUV market, and it makes a splash with its exterior style. It comes in just two trim levels, and both include a lot of standard features. The base-level XLE comes with 18-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights, and a rear spoiler. You'll also get remote unlocking. A step up to the XLE Premium adds fog lights, as well as keyless entry and ignition. It also comes with power-folding side mirrors and some additional comfort features on the inside.
Engine
Both models get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 144 horsepower and 139 pound-feet of torque. They come with front-wheel drive, and the transmission is a continuously variable automatic. The engine has three different drive modes to choose from. You can select Eco when you want to maximize fuel efficiency, Sport to have the engine simulate seven different gears and a sportier drive, or just keep it in the Normal mode.
Performance
The compact style and firm handling make this a great city car. It handles corners easily and can even hold onto a lot of speed when cornering, keeping a firm grip on the road. The steering feels responsive and provides the driver with a good feeling of control. The fuel economy is average for this class of vehicle, with an EPA rating of 29 mpg combined. That breaks out to 27 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.
Interior
While the C-CH fits into the subcompact segment, it has a surprising amount of space in the cabin. The front-seat passengers have a comfortable space, and in the back, the rear-seat passengers have plenty of headroom and legroom. Behind the rear seat, you'll find 19 cubic feet of cargo space, which opens up to 36.4 cubic feet with the seats folded down. A 7-inch touch-screen display comes standard in both trims, and you'll also get Bluetooth, an HD radio, and steering-wheel controls for the audio system. Upgrade to the Premium model for heated front seats complete with a two-way power lumbar-adjustment feature for the driver.
Safety Features
The C-HR comes standard with a rearview camera and an auto-dimming rearview mirror in both trims. Driver assist safety features such as automatic cruise control, a brake hold system for when you stop at a traffic light, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking are also standard. Both models feature a lane departure warning system with lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. If you bump up to the XLE Premium, it adds a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert.
