Trim Levels
The 2017 Toyota Avalon has five trim levels, three of which have hybrid versions. The five trims are the XLE, XLE Plus, XLE Premium, Touring, and Limited, and the hybrids are the XLE Plus, XLE Premium, and Limited. Standard features found on all models include leather seats with multistage heating elements, Entune Audio with Connected Navigation, and the Toyota Safety Sense package. If you decide to go with the Limited model, you'll also get luxury features like a JBL audio system with 11 speakers, premium leather, a Qi-compatible wireless charger, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
Engine
The 2017 Avalon's nonhybrid models rely on a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. The engine comes with a six-speed automatic transmission and a drive mode selector with Sport, ECO, and Normal modes. According to the EPA, the standard Avalon gets 21 city and 30 highway mpg. The hybrid's engine is a 2.5-liter I4 and a 650V electric engine that can manage 200 net horsepower and comes with EV, ECO, and Sport modes. Also standard is an advanced CVT that lets the Avalon get 40 city and 39 highway mpg.
Performance
A comfortable ride doesn't always mean floaty handling. The 2017 Toyota Avalon proves this by offering remarkably tight steering and responsive braking despite having a suspension designed for comfort. An Avalon with the standard engine also comes with paddle shifters for drivers who want manual control over the transmission. The Touring trim features a suspension retuned for a sportier feedback.
Interior
The 2017 Avalon's interior is a definite highlight in terms of size and features. Both rows have plenty of room for adults, the LATCH anchors for child seats are easy to reach, and the trunk is a spacious 16 cubic feet. As for features, the Limited trim comes with tri-zone automatic climate control with separate controls and vents for the back row, a rare sight for a sedan. The Limited also has a power rear window sunshade that can keep the heat off rear passengers, and the XLE Plus comes with an advanced rearview mirror that dims automatically and has a built-in compass and universal transceiver.
Safety Features
Toyota is big on safety, which is why the 2017 Toyota Avalon comes with 10 standard air bags, the Star Safety System that integrates six electronic safety features, and Toyota Safety Sense P. This package offers driver assistance systems that are only optional for other automakers, such as automatic high beams, a Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and the very important Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. This last system will warn you if you're about to hit something and can even start braking for you if you don't react fast enough.
